Physicists classify ultraviolet radiation into three types, by its wavelengths: UVA, UVB and UVC. But 98.7% of the UV radiation that reach the earth's surface is UVA. UVC is absorbed by the upper atmosphere (ozone layer) and does not reach the earth's surface.
Even on cloudy and rainy days, both UVA and UVB can reach the earth. UVA can pass through glass windows, while UVB remains primarily at the epidermal level and is partially blocked by the stratum corneum. UVA penetrates deeper into the dermis.
